Last week, the Evanston RoundTable newspaper published a feature I wrote about the brilliant gypsy jazz/Italian mambo band La Tosca Chicago: La Tosca creates soulful fusion of European nostalgia. Probably the most on-brand article I’ve ever written, I’m thrilled to share!
I have been attending La Tosca’s shows for many years, and always knew I’d like to interview the musicians. After working hard on the article – I’m back to newspaper work for the first time since fall 2021 – I really like how the piece turned out, and thankfully the band does too.
However, some of the background about gypsy jazz, and its influence on the musicians, was cut by editors for the final version. I am happy to report though that violinist Stephanie Pielok told me she shares my fascination with music of the Romani people, and the incredible depth of emotion it evokes. Joy, sorrow, playfulness, grief, excitement and everything in between – it’s all there, and it’s why I love the music.
