Today’s National Catholic Reporter published an article which follows my October reporting on women who allege abuse, harassment, and grooming by composer David Haas. At this point, 52 women have submitted reports to the survivor advocacy group Into Account.
Read my piece here: St. Catherine’s report sparks calls for accountability from survivors of alleged abuse by David Haas
The story covers St. Catherine University’s March report about Haas, and others who worked at and attended the Music Ministry Alive summer camp which was based at the university. It was another extremely difficult story to write for a number of reasons – including the fact that so many of the survivors I spoke to ended up not making the final edited version. It’s always an enormous privilege to be trusted with survivors’ stories.
Can the institutional church respond in a rational, sympathetic way to survivors who allege abuse absent a criminal conviction or archdiocesan report? That’s really what this story is about.
